Teak‘s natural oils make it immune to most insects and extremely resistant to wind, water, salt, and temperature changes. These natural oils, as well as the presence of silica in the wood, also make it very unlikely to warp, split, or crack. Because of this durability, teak has been used for the manufacture of nautical products, outdoor decking and furniture, and boat decks since the middle ages. In fact, teak is so durable that when ships were no longer seaworthy due to age, the teak decking was frequently still in such good condition that it was often re-purposed as outdoor furniture. Century old teak benches are still used in parts of the world to this day.
